Formatting tips for business messages

  • Bold the one thing that matters: the price, the deadline or the call to action — not the whole message.
  • Use line breaks generously. Short paragraphs of 1–2 lines get read; walls of text get skipped.
  • Strikethrough is perfect for offers: ~$49~ $29 shows the discount at a glance.
  • Put the hook first. Only the first 60–100 characters appear in the notification preview.

WhatsApp formatting FAQ

How do I write bold text on WhatsApp?

Wrap the text in asterisks: *your text* becomes bold. For italic use _underscores_, for strikethrough use ~tildes~, and for monospace use ```three backticks```. The buttons above insert the marks for you.

Does formatting work in WhatsApp Business and WhatsApp Web?

Yes. The same marks work in the phone apps, WhatsApp Business, WhatsApp Web and the desktop app. The preview above shows exactly how the message will render.

Can I combine bold and italic?

Yes — nest the marks: *_text_* renders as bold italic. Keep the order symmetrical (open with *, close with *) or the formatting breaks.

Is there a character limit for WhatsApp messages?

WhatsApp allows very long messages (around 65,000 characters), but for marketing messages shorter is better: the first 60–100 characters are what people see in the notification preview.

Do emojis count as formatting?

Emojis are just characters, so they work anywhere — including inside bold or italic text. Use them sparingly in business messages: one or two per paragraph reads better than a wall of icons.

Can I use this formatted text in bulk campaigns?

Yes. Copy the formatted text into WhatsApp Sender Tool and it is sent exactly as formatted, with optional {{name}} personalization and AI-written variants for each contact.
